Larwood School
Larwood is a successful and forward-thinking primary special school based in Stevenage with a smaller site in Dunstable, Bedfordshire. We support up to 163 pupils with a range of social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs across our primary sites. Many of our pupils also have diagnoses such as ADHD, autism, and other special educational needs.
Why the Name 'Larwood'?
Larwood School is proudly named after Harold Larwood, one of England's greatest cricketers and a true sporting legend. His remarkable life story embodies the values we champion every day: hard work, resilience, determination and integrity.
Harold Larwood: A Sporting Icon
Harold Larwood was born on 14 November 1904 in Nottinghamshire, into a working-class mining family. Before rising to cricketing fame, he worked in the coal mines – a demanding job that shaped his legendary work ethic and mental toughness.
Through talent, grit and sheer determination, Larwood became one of the fastest and most accurate bowlers of his generation. Representing both Nottinghamshire and England, he achieved national fame in the 1930s and became a household name.
The Bodyline Series
Larwood played a central role in the famous – and controversial – "Bodyline" Ashes series of 1932–33. This bold tactical approach was designed to counter the brilliance of Australian batting legend Donald Bradman. Larwood's pace and precision were instrumental to the strategy's success.
Despite intense pressure and controversy, when asked to apologise for his role, Larwood refused. He stood by his actions and his captain, demonstrating remarkable loyalty, courage and integrity – qualities that define true character.

Our Logo and What It Means
A New Era: The 2025 Logo Update
In 2025, Larwood School embarked on a new chapter with the introduction of an updated logo—one that honours our history while looking confidently toward the future.
The new design features a radiant sun sweeping across the rolling hills of Stevenage. This rising sun symbolises:
- Bright futures – the optimistic path we help our pupils shape.
- Growth and progression – represented by the motion and energy within the design.
- A subtle tribute to our cricketing heritage – the swirling arc of the sun reflects the motion of a fast ball, paying homage to Harold Larwood’s skill and legacy.
Each Larwood setting now carries its own adapted version of the logo, ensuring a consistent identity while celebrating the unique character and strengths of each community within the Larwood family.
Honouring Where We’ve Been, Celebrating Where We’re Heading
Displaying the old and new logos side by side shows more than a design change—it reflects the evolution of Larwood School itself. From our proud historical roots to our forward‑looking vision, the updated logo represents who we are today: a school grounded in resilience and aspiration, committed to helping every child shine.
Our School Today
We are proud of the growth of our amazing school which now serves across two counties; offering excellent facilities for learning, sport, play and recreation. We have a highly skilled team, and every staff member plays a vital role in helping pupils succeed both academically and personally.
Our broad and evolving curriculum includes off-site learning experiences, engaging activities, and personalised topics. Behaviour is managed using the Hertfordshire Steps programme, which focuses on therapeutic support, consistency, positive reinforcement, and clear expectations. The progress we see in our pupils is often remarkable.
Academy and Trust
In 2016, Larwood became an academy. This gave us the flexibility to expand and improve what we offer:
The Space Hub – A dedicated setting for 16 pupils whose main need is autism/Learning Difficulties.
Pathways – In September 2024, Larwood School opened its Pathways provision, supporting children who were out of school and experiencing difficulties securing a school placement.
Larwood Dunstable – In December 2025, the Trust opened its first satellite provision for Larwood School in Dunstable.
Outreach Service – Supporting up to 25 plus primary schools across Stevenage with pupil support and staff training.
Brandles School Partnership – A secondary SEMH school that joined our Trust in 2020. We work closely together to ensure a smooth transition and strong outcomes for pupils.
