Intent
At Larwood School we believe that high-quality Art lessons inspire children to think creatively, explore ideas and develop their individual artistic potential.
Our Art curriculum provides opportunities for pupils to develop their skills through a range of media and materials. Children explore the key artistic processes of drawing, painting, printing, sculpture, textiles and 3D work, developing both their practical techniques and creative confidence.
Pupils study a diverse range of artists, designers and craft makers, enabling them to broaden their cultural understanding and develop the vocabulary needed to discuss and evaluate art. Through this exposure, pupils begin to understand how artists communicate ideas, emotions and experiences.
Art at Larwood supports pupils in expressing themselves, building confidence and developing resilience. Pupils are encouraged to reflect on their work, celebrate individuality and recognise that creativity involves experimentation and growth.
Where appropriate, artistic skills are linked to wider curriculum topics, allowing pupils to deepen their understanding and apply their creativity across subjects.
Implementation
The Art and Design curriculum at Larwood School is informed by the National Curriculum and structured through a clear progression of knowledge and skills across the school.
Pupils develop their understanding of key artistic techniques through carefully sequenced learning experiences. Each unit typically begins with the exploration of a relevant artist or artistic style before pupils experiment with materials and techniques to develop their own ideas.
Throughout the process, pupils:
- Practise and refine key artistic skills
- Explore different media and creative approaches
- Reflect on and evaluate their own work and the work of others
- Develop confidence in expressing artistic ideas
Learning builds towards a final piece, allowing pupils to apply the techniques they have learned and demonstrate their developing skills.
Constructive feedback and opportunities for reflection support pupils in improving their work and understanding the creative process.
Where possible, educational visits, visiting artists and links with the local community further enrich the curriculum and provide real-world artistic inspiration
