Knowledge of the World (RE)

Achieve Believe Expect Enjoy

Intent

At Larwood School, Religious Education is taught as part of Knowledge of the World (KOTW). Our aim is to help pupils develop knowledge and understanding of Christianity and the other principal religions represented in the UK and across the world, including Islam, Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism and Buddhism.

Through this learning, pupils explore how religious beliefs shape people’s lives, values and behaviours. They develop the ability to ask questions, think critically and make informed judgements about religious and moral issues.

By learning about a range of religions and cultures, pupils gain an understanding of the diversity within modern society. We aim to foster curiosity, respect and tolerance, helping pupils to appreciate different beliefs and traditions.

Knowledge of the World contributes strongly to pupils’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development (SMSC) and supports our commitment to promoting British Values, particularly respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs.

Implementation

Religious Education is delivered through Knowledge of the World Weeks each half-term, as well as through assemblies and links with PSHE.

Christianity is studied in every year group, while other world religions are explored through thematic learning and key religious festivals. For example, pupils may learn about Islam during Ramadan, Hinduism during Diwali or Judaism through the study of festivals and traditions.

Teaching follows an enquiry-based approach, encouraging pupils to ask questions, explore ideas and reflect on beliefs and values. Lessons are designed to be engaging and accessible for all pupils and often include practical activities such as:

  • creative arts and craft activities
  • cooking and tasting traditional foods
  • exploring religious artefacts
  • visits to places of worship
  • meeting visitors from different faith communities

Pupils demonstrate their learning through a variety of outcomes, including writing, presentations, artwork and digital media.

Assemblies also support learning by encouraging reflection, celebration and discussion of key values within different religions and cultures.

Throughout the year, pupils take part in important religious and cultural events such as the Nativity, Easter celebrations and learning about major festivals from other faiths, including Diwali and Ramadan.

We make no assumptions about pupils’ religious backgrounds and approach all faiths with respect and sensitivity. Families are welcomed to share their experiences where appropriate.

Impact

Through Knowledge of the World, pupils develop an understanding of different religions, cultures and traditions. They learn to reflect on beliefs, ask thoughtful questions and appreciate the diversity of the world around them.

By the end of primary school, pupils will:

  • understand key beliefs and practices within a range of world religions
  • recognise similarities and differences between faiths and cultures
  • discuss religious and moral ideas with respect and sensitivity
  • demonstrate tolerance and understanding of others’ beliefs

Impact is measured through:

  • assessments of key knowledge and vocabulary
  • pupil discussions and questionnaires
  • monitoring of pupils’ work and displays
  • observations during assemblies and KOTW activities

Pupils leave Larwood School with a respectful attitude towards diversity and the confidence to engage thoughtfully with different beliefs, cultures and traditions.
